Academic and athletic sleeve stripes for a varsity jacket represent the number of years of accomplishment. A player who made varsity for four years (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), for example, would have a varsity letter and four sleeve stripes or chevrons, depending upon the region. Sleeve stripes are alternatives to chevrons.
